Promenade is a site specific sound urban intervention that proposes a public space musical occupation with performance procedures.
First of all, the artist search one street in the city with specific physical and social aspects to create his installation: the street must be narrow, and its inhabitants must be, somehow, receptive to an artistic intervention.
This urban research is made by systematic bike rides through the streets, and it is based in the situationist concept of derive. In this phase, the artist will be aware of the physical, acoustic and social aspects of the space.
Once found, 12 apartments of the chosen street will receive an audio track, each one containing a different layer of one musical composition.
The inhabitants will be asked to play the tracks in the same day, at the same time, with their own sound system placed in their windows and pointed toward the street.
The idea is to use only the equipment found in the apartments, in order to establish a radical site specific relation with the space. A readymade gear that will enrich the sound results with different sound characteristics: every apartment will display its sound layer with a different sound system.
In this sense, the negotiation with the inhabitants is an essential part of the creative process, as it not only defines how the urban intervention will transform their relations with and in the public space, but also will establish a commitment.
A deep dive into the privacy and the intimate space of some people, that will lead to public space experience.
This urban intervention has been presented in three different occasions, in Munich / Germany developed during the PlusBrasil / Villa Waldberta Residency Program in 2016, in Bogotá / Colombia for a project developed in collaboration with the Universidad Pedagogica Nacional in 2015, in São Paulo / Brazil at the event Virada Cultural 2015, in Cadiz / Spain as a result of the residency program Linea De Costa in 2014, in Paris for the exhibition ‘Si ma rue était…’ in 2013 and in São Paulo / Brazil at the event Virada Cultural 2013.
The position of each listening point will be made respecting an acoustic concept considering mixing frequencies, spatial composition and distance.
In this context, to listen to all tracks, one must walk through the street and perceive the changes in the sound textures while moving.
In this sense, evolved by music like in a movie, the interactor experiences the same street he is used to pass everyday in a completely different way. By walking through it, he is surprised by radical change in its soundscape, an oneiric experience that lead him to another perception of that space and that moment.
This synesthetic experience not only enables new emotional reactions, but also different memories and affective relations with that street. A contemplative state of mind that enables a new way of perceiving the space.
PROMENADE @ MUNICH, VILLA WALDBERTA / PLUSBRAZIL RESIDENCY PROGRAM, MUNICH, GERMANY, 2016
Realized in collaboration with Zamira Duque
PROMEDADE @ MINHOCÃO, VIRADA CULTURAL, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, 2015
In Minhocão highway, we spent 15 days negotiating and installing sound systems in the house of residents.
As the aspect ratio and noise level were very different from those found in Paris and Cadiz, we have speakers rented for better sound perception of passersby.
We concentrated our efforts in negotiation and sound in spots with greater density of buildings on both sides of the track.
The negotiating procedures in Minhocão were very interesting and intense as we had personal contact with its residents and we understood better their desires and expectations in relation to the park project announced by the city hall last year.
In this sense, by performing the action in Minhocão we have brought up the issue about the use of public space in a ludic, participatory, oneiric and aesthetic way.
PROMENADE @ SEPTIMA AVENIDA, UNIVERSIDAD PEDAGOGICA NACIONAL, BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA, 2015
PROMENADE @ CALLE ANCHA, LINEA DE COSTA RESIDENCY PROGRAM, CADIZ, ESPANHA, 2014
Realized in collaboration with Talma Salem
In Cadiz, we occupied the Calle Ancha, central artery of the historic city center that links the St. Anthony Square to Municipal Market.
Like in Paris, the choice of the windows was performed according to an acoustic study of the street, and we only used sound systems found in people’s homes and / or borrowed from friends in the city. We also found an acoustic piano positioned in one of the windows, which gave us an even richer musical and sonic experience.
For two weeks, we conducted derive actions in the city streets to look for potential places to the performance. These actions were taken in systematic bike rides for all neighborhoods of the historic center.
At this stage, we were attentive to social and urban structure of the street: we seek a fundamentally residential street where there is a large flow of pedestrian traffic.
After list some options, we started the negotiation procedures. At this stage, we had to find an inhabitant who would trust us, and would take part of the project and open the doors for us to know other inhabitants.
The negotiations were very successful and, as in Paris, the positive and negative feedback end up determining the performance space.
PROMENADE @ RUE GUSTAVE GOUBLIER, PARIS, FRANCE 2013
The mixing and the spatialization were performed in middle of the street, considering the nature of the sound of the different tracks, the quality of the sound system and the position of the windows (floor and building).
In this context, high frequencies smooth sounds were placed in higher windows, while low percussive sounds and the theme in piano were placed in ground floor windows. The result is an acoustic creation conceived specificly for that street with all its physical and cultural aspects.
PROMENADE @ VIRADA CULTURAL SP, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL 2013
In São Paulo, the Promenade installation was exhibited at Augusta street. Sixteen speakers were placed in different points of the sidewalk. The impact of the sound in the public space allows new ways of being perceived.
Presented at Virada Cultural Paulistana (São Paulo / Brazil 2013)
