Forest_AIR_becoming forest :: Life is an Utopia is an sound urban intervention for public spaces that discusses the preservation and conservation of native forests in Brazil through the contemplation of natural sound scapes.

30 speakers in 225 meters of the Minhocão downtown highway (one speaker every 7,5m), 10 hours per day (10am-8pm), with 3 different sound ambients, morning, afternoon and nightfall.

integrant of the series ‘Life is an Utopia’, problematizes and questions the growing devaluation of life in face of the financial market, manifested in the recent environmental catastrophes and the systematic dismantling of social and human rights. Based on propositions of counterposition between the blunting and the contemplative, in the series the artist explores the Japanese cultural term Ma as an opening to the environment, to everything that surrounds us and we do not control, proposing a critical view of the system through a resilient perspective.

This sound occupation has a deep political symbolism as part of the population of São Paulo wants to transform the Minhocão highway in a suspended park. The area is closed for cars during the weekends and every night after 8pm. While it is closed for traffic, people enjoy the incredible skylines and the huge area for practicing sports and leisure. In that sense, interferring is this area with a sound occupation that proposes soundscapes of forest areas in the state of São Paulo is a profound ecological and urbanistic statement.

Devir floresta

Becoming forest

The recent ecological disasters occurred in Brazil are the most shocking acts of disrespect and disregard for life. We must be aware that these incidents are not accidents, they are actually socially produced catastrophes. Crimes practiced against the whole humanity, that will demand a lot from the next generations. A transversal line of death that passes close to countless sad events experienced in 2019 and 2020. Therefore, becoming forest means, today, urgency of life, and resistance and resilience.
