Sound Instalation for Public Spaces :: Promenade :: Si ma rue était… :: Paris/France

Public Space Sound Installation :: Promenade 15 MIN St. Version by Dudu Tsuda

Promenade is a site specific sound installation that proposes a public space musical occupation. Each one of 12 inhabitants of Gustave Goublier street received a recording of a different lay of one musical composition. They played the track in the same day, at the same time, with their own sound system pointed toward the street. The alteration of the street’s soundscape allowed the rediscovering of public space.

The original proposal of this project was to record sounds of different locations of Paris, and then recreate everyday events into an immersive sound system. But, during the creation process, i discovered that the traffic noise was too loud to let the local nuances ben heard. So i started to record the differences of the soundscapes heard in neighborhoods with a concentration of immigrants of the same ethnicity, discussing the adaptation e immigration in Paris.

Synopsis

‘Le monde est une catastrophe rythmique’

Valère Novarina

The surround sound piece entitle Silence results from my last research in sound realized during this journey through Japan.

This composition is based in my impressions and sensation related to emptiness and the space between buildings and structures that I could perceive in Japanese Temples and Shrines. These field recordings were made in the city of Nikko, Nagano Prefecture (Nagano, Togakushi, and Matsumoto), Kyoto, Nara and Koyasan. All those places are famous to host important temples and shrines, and for that reason they composed the first part of my trip in Japan.

This piece will be performed live, with realtime composition, spatialization and mixing of the audio samples recorded.

 Concept

The relation of silence and Japanese culture is very complex, and therefore led me to three different kind of possible approaches.

The first one is the relation with space, sound, silence and the divine, expressed by the piece Silence. I was really impressed by the dimensions of the temples and Shrines, and specially by its space organization, designed with emptiness and long distances. The way the priests uses the sound and its propagation through the huge halls and the empty spaces between the buildings has a strict relation to this holy sensation provided by these wondrous architectural structures.

The second approach was conceived when I was in France, applying for this residency program. At that time, I was thinking and trying to create some artistic connection to the sensation of silence in culture. This inspiration led me to the noisiest places in Japan, the Pachinko parlors.

I had a hypothesis that the Pachinko is a result of the difficulty that Japanese people have to express their emotions and feelings in a public context. And to the loneliness that we can find in huge cities, which in Tokyo, I thought to be even bigger.

The last one is based in my impressions of the impact of Fukushima nuclear accident in Japanese society, and how it creates a kind of silence around the subject. I feel that there is a national concern about the human problems that were caused by this incident, specially to those that lived in the area. And when I am referring to this point, I am aiming at local farmers and fishermen who had their trust and image totally destroyed by the fear of nuclear contamination.

My research at TWS Tokyo Wonder Residency Program

Purpose of the residency

I decided to come to Tokyo to this residency program because I was very interested in have more contact with Japanese culture. Due to my origins, the silence in japanese society has always interested me, and whe I fisrt came to Tokyo in 2008, I was really impressed with the contrast between the noisy and crowd urban ambients and the silent and spacious shrines and temples. This sensation led me to start researching the japanese concept of “Ma” in relation to sound and space, and this research gave the basis to create this project I am developing right now.

Plan during the residency

I am planning to make several field recordings in different places and situations in Tokyo, focusing in moments of silence and contemplative sensation. I am considering the contrast of sound ambiences, spatial sensation and memories and images that the recordings could inspire. The most important thing about this task is ambient awareness, and for this reason my working methods are based in observation and exploratory bike riding. As bike riding provides a direct contact with the urban ambient and it is a faster way of moving, it allows me to cover large areas. It also provides a very good way to observe the situations and places with a certain distance before start recording, and to capture some sounds in movement. There are some situations that require some strategy to be recorded. (I already used this kind of procedure during my residency in Paris, in 2012. At the time, I was recording neighborhoods which concentrates immigrants from determined cultures, which required me description and ingenious strategies of sound recording).

All the sounds recorded will be then organized for editing and mixing. This part of the work is very arduous, and normally take most of the time in studio. As I am not sure if all the sound sculptures for the installation will be concluded, I am planning to present part of the results in the Open Studio in february.

Project

Sound art installation that deals with silence in japanese culture through a poetic spatial occupation with sound. The sound sculptures are composed by field recordings which are conceived as a result of a aesthetic and cultural research in Pachinko houses, Temples and Shrines in cities like Nagano, Matsumoto, Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan and Tokyo.
